Entrevista a Marc Langis

Hoy os dejo esta nueva entrevista con Marc Langis, bajista de Céline Dion desde 1995, hecha por mí mismo en exclusiva para este blog.
Hola Marc. Antes de empezar, ¡gracias por darme la oportunidad de entrevistarte!
Hola Carlos, gracias a ti por las preguntas.
1. Trabajas con Céline desde 1995, ¿puedes describir qué supuso para ti salir de gira con ella por primera vez con el 'D'eux Tour' aquel año?
Cuando era pequeño soñaba con que algún día haría una gira por todo el mundo como mis ídolos, Los Beatles. No sabía cuándo, cómo ni con quién, pero era mi sueño. Así que, obviamente, cuando me surgió esta oportunidad en 1995, fue un momento muy especial para mí. En aquel momento, iba a ser una gira de tres meses por Europa. Aquella primera gira mundial con Celine duró 2 años. Ahora, llevo 18 años formando parte del equipo. Me siento muy agradecido.
2. ¿Qué puedes decirnos sobre tu relación con Céline Dion?
Tengo muchísimo respeto por Céline y René. Antes solíamos pasar más tiempo con ellos, en cenas y demás. Ahora Céline tiene una familia. Sé exactamente lo que eso significa porque yo también tengo hijos. Lo más importante es que mantenemos el contacto siempre, durante las pruebas de sonido o cuando coincidimos en los pasillos. Esto siempre será una prioridad para nosotros.
3. Ahora hablemos de música ¿Hay alguna canción (o canciones) del catálogo de Céline que consideres tu favorita (o favoritas)?
Tengo muchas canciones favoritas. Because You Loved Me es ciertamente una de ellas. Celine tiene muchas grandes canciones con mensajes muy buenos. Yo aprecio mucho que se fije tanto en ese aspecto cada vez que elige una canción. Como bajista, también me encanta la música "de moda", y Treat Her Like A Lady es otra de mis favoritas. La interpretamos de nuevo el año pasado en Jamaica y lo disfruté mucho. La gente enloqueció cuando llegamos a esa canción.
4. ¿Hay alguna canción del repertorio de Céline que te gustaría tocar en directo y que aún no lo has hecho?
Algunas canciones de sus anteriores álbumes en francés son realmente interesantes. Nunca acabamos tocándolas en directo, a pesar de que nos las aprendimos. Yo lo veo como un problema, me refiero al hecho de tener tanto material de buena calidad y no poder siempre incluirlo todo.
5. ¿Puedes describir la experiencia de trabajar con una orquesta de 31 músicos cada noche en Las Vegas y la diferencia con respecto a las giras mundiales que has hecho en el pasado?
Me encanta tocar con una orquesta como la que nos acompaña ahora en el escenario en Las Vegas. Por supuesto, esto requiere un repertorio diferente y ese es un cambio digno de agradecer después de tantos años. Céline realmente quería cantar todos esos grandes clásicos que interpretamos actualmente, y el resultado es una noche única con mucha clase. Para mí, es como tocar en los Oscars cada noche.
6. ¿Qué hay de aquel memorable concierto en el Festival de Jazz y Blues de Jamaica en enero del año pasado? ¿Qué nos puedes contar de esa experiencia?
No tenía ni idea de que los jamaicanos fuesen tan fans de Celine. Estamos hablando de un lugar con mucha historia musical, Bob Marley y todo el tema del reggae. Fue una noche genial para todos nosotros. Me dijeron que fue el mayor concierto de la historia de Jamaica, con un público de decenas de miles de personas cantando. Casi no pudimos llegar al concierto porque el tráfico era tremendo aquel día ¡Fue una locura tío!
7. Ahora que las redes sociales, como Facebook y Twitter, son lo más popular del momento, ¿qué piensas sobre el contacto entre Céline Dion y sus fans? ¿Crees que podría ser mejor?
No sé cómo Céline y la gente de la oficina trabaja con toda la información de la web y de la página oficial en Facebook. El simple hecho de ver y organizar todas las opiniones y comentarios de fans de todo el mundo requiere muchos trabajadores a jornada completa. Facebook es genial pero puede consumir mucho tiempo. Espero que los fans lo entiendan.
8. ¿Quiénes son tus cantantes favoritos?
Los Beatles fueron mi primera influencia musical y aún los tengo en lo más alto. Hay muchos grandes artistas por todo el mundo, y ahora con Internet hay incluso más material disponible cada día. Adele tiene sin duda un talento increíble, y para todos los fans del jazz, Kurt Elling es el mejor para mí en ese género.
9. Además de tu trabajo como colaborador habitual de Céline Dion, tienes una web personal (www.marclangis.com) en la que compartes información muy interesante sobre ti, como biografía, fotos, vídeos y más ¿Puedes hablarnos sobre tu trabajo como artista en solitario?
En lo que respecta a mi carrera en solitario, damos una conferencia en varias ciudades y en la que hablamos sobre cumplir nuestros sueños. Yo menciono mi historia, desde los años en los que empecé a tocar música en mi habitación hasta compartir escenario alrededor del mundo con Celine Dion. Es una presentación de 70 minutos y estoy orgulloso de compartir mi historia. Solemos recibir muy buenos comentarios tras cada presentación.
10. Tienes dos álbumes disponibles en iTunes: 'Terrae Incognitae' (1993) and 'Novum Canticum' (2009) ¿Qué supuso para ti volver a grabar un álbum, después de tanto tiempo?
Te agradezco que menciones mis dos anteriores discos en solitario, porque son muy distintos de lo que llevo haciendo con Celine todos estos años. 'Terrae Incognitae' es un álbum de música jazz electrónica que grabé el año anterior a unirme al grupo de Celine. Realmente no pude promocionarlo porque la carrera de Celine despegó muy rápidamente, y antes de que me diera cuenta, habían pasado cinco años. Era hora de pasar página. El álbum 'Novum Canticum' es música sagrada basada en cantos gregorianos y lo creé en mi ciudad natal durante el solsticio de invierno de 2009. Lo grabamos el año siguiente. Mañana mismo me meteré en un estudio para grabar un nuevo proyecto con la cantante Bianca Pittoors, y nuestro grupo se llama 'Bianca Basso'. Estamos pensando en publicar nuestro primer álbum con música original a finales de 2013 ¡Estamos muy entusiasmados!
11. Una última pregunta: Desgraciadamente, Celine no visitó a sus fans españoles durante su última gira mundial ¿Alguna vez has venido a España y te gustaría tocar con ella aquí?
Me encantaría ir a España, ¡con Celine o Bianca Basso! Me encantan la cultura y la música de España y sería una pasada poder ir un día. Es uno de los pocos lugares del mundo que me quedan por descubrir.

Hi Marc. First of all, thanks for giving me the chance of interviewing you, it's such a privilege!
Let's go with the questions:
1. You've been working with Céline since 1995. Can you describe what it was for you to tour with her for the very first time with the 'D'eux Tour' that year?
Growing up I used to dream that one day I would be touring the world like my idols The Beatles. I didn't know when, how or with whom, but that was my dream. So obviously when this opportunity came along in 1995, it was awesome for me. At the time, it was supposed to be a three month Tour of Europe. That first world tour with Celine lasted 2 years. Now I've been part of the team for 18 years. I feel so blessed.
2. What can you tell us about your relationship with Céline Dion?
I have the greatest respect for Celine and Rene. We used to be with them more often then, sharing meals and everything. Now Celine has a family. I know exactly what it means as I also have kids. The main thing is that we keep in touch all the time, during sound checks or when we meet in corridors. This remains a priority for the both of them.
3. Now let's get into music. Is there any song (or songs) from Céline's catalogue that you consider your favorite (or favorites)?
I have many favorite songs. "Because you loved me" is certainly one of them. Celine has many great songs with beautiful messages. I greatly appreciate the fact that she is aware and careful about that issue with each song she chooses. Being a bass player, I also love the groovy stuff, and "Treat her like a lady" is another favorite of mine. We performed it again last year in Jamaica and I had a great time. The people there were crazy about that song.
4. Is there any song from Celine's repertoire that you'd like to play live and that you still haven't?
Some songs from her previous French albums are really interesting. We never ended up playing them live, even though we learned them. I see it as a nice problem to have so much great material that you can't always include them all.
5. Can you describe the experience of working with a 31-piece orchestra every night in Vegas and how different it is from the world tours you've done in the past?
I love playing with an orchestra like the one on stage in Vegas right now. Of course it requires a different repertoire and that is a nice change after so many years. Celine really wanted to sing all those great classics that we are performing now, and it makes for a beautiful evening with a lot of class. To me, it is like performing at the Oscars every night!
6. What about that memorable concert at the Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival in January of last year? What can you tell us about that experience?
I didn't realize that the people from Jamaica were such Celine fans. This is a place with a lot of musical history, Bob Marley and the whole reggae thing. It was an awesome night for all of us. I was told that it was the biggest concert ever in Jamaica, with a crowd of tens of thousands of people cheering. We almost missed the show because the traffic was so bad getting to the site. We had to turn back and use a back road to get to the venue. It was crazy. Ya man!
7. Now that the social sites, such as Facebook and Twitter seem to be on top of popularity, what do you think about the contact between Céline Dion and her fans? Do you think it could be better?
I don't know how Celine and the people at the office manage all the information on the web and on Facebook. It requires many full time workers to get around all the requests from her fans around the world. Facebook is a great thing but it can be very time consuming. I hope that the fans understand.
8. Who are your favorite singers?
The Beatles were my first musical influence growing up and I still think very highly of them. There are so many great artists all over the world, and now with the Internet there is even more material available every day. Adele is certainly an incredible talent, and for all the jazz fans out there, Kurt Elling is the one for me in that genre.
9. Besides your job as a long-time collaborator with Céline Dion, you also have a personal website ( www.marclangis.com ), in which you share very interesting information about you, like biography, pics, videos and more. Can you tell us about your job as a solo artist?
It is funny that you mention my two previous solo albums, because they are quite different from what I have been doing with Celine all those years. Terrae Incognitae is a electric jazz album that I recorded the year before joining Celine's Band. I could never really promote it since Celine's career took off very quickly, and before I knew it five years had passed. It was time to move on. The Novum Canticum album is sacred music based on gregorian chants and that was created in my hometown on the winter solstice of 2009. We then recorded it the following year. Tomorrow, I am moving into a recording studio to begin a new project with singer Bianca Pittoors, and our group is called Bianca Basso. We are planning to release our first album of original music in the fall of 2013. This is all very exciting!
Concerning my solo career, there is a conference that we have been presenting in various cities which talks about achieving your dreams. I speak about the years from the time I started playing music in my bedroom, to sharing the stage around the world with Celine Dion. It is a 70 minute presentation and I am proud to share my journey. We have received great comments every time we have presented it.
10. Your have two albums available on iTunes: 'Terrae Incognitae' (1993) and 'Novum Canticum' (2009). What was it like for you to record an album again, after such a long time?
11. One last question: Unfortunately, Céline didn't visit her Spanish fans during her last world tour. Have you ever come to Spain and would you like to play with her here?
I'd love to go to Spain, with Celine or Bianca Basso! I love the culture and the music from Spain and it truly would be awesome to go there one day. It is one of the few places in the world I have yet to discover.
