Entrevista con André Coutu

Tengo el honor de poder presentaros el primer gran logro de este blog desde su inicio el pasado mes de junio: una entrevista con el guitarrista de Celine Dion desde 1991, André Coutu. (ENGLISH VERSION AVAILABLE BELOW)
Hola André. Antes de nada, gracias de nuevo por permitirme hacerte esta entrevista y dedicarme tu tiempo. Eres muy atento.
Vamos allá con las preguntas:
1. Como sabemos, trabajas con Celine desde hace varios años ¿Podrías hablarme sobre cómo fue conocerla? Fue hace 25 años. Me llamaron para sustituir a mi profesor de música Michael Pucci para un concierto con Celine en Quebec City, en aquel entonces, era un grupo totalmente distinto, ¡ni siquiera Mego estaba allí aún! Estaba muy emocionado, uno de mis primeros trabajos como músico profesional. No había ensayado con el grupo. Por supuesto, ¡había escuchado y trabajado en todas las canciones en casa para aprenderme el material lo mejor posible! Llegamos a la prueba de sonido por la tarde y, ya sabes, la moda de aquella época, ¡yo llevaba unos pantalones bastante graciosos con rayas grandes! Celine fue muy maja conmigo, se acercó a mí y me dijo: ¡Ei, me gustan tus pantalones!
2. ¿Cómo describirías tu primera gira con Celine Dion? La primera gira importante que hice con Celine fue cuando eramos teloneros del cantante Michael Bolton en 1992. Era en verano, pasamos por las principales ciudades americanas, espectáculos al aire libre para públicos bastante considerables, ¡fue muy divertido!
3. ¿Cómo es trabajar con Celine Dion? ¿Cómo es tu relación con ella? Celine es una persona muy dulce, probablemente igual que como tú la ves ¡Es genuina y muy maja! Intento siempre darle lo mejor de mí como músico. Rara vez nos pide cosas concretas, parece confiar en lo que hacemos. Mego, nuestro director musical, es también muy agradable y se hace cargo de todos nosotros. Es genial trabajar con Celine, ¡tiene mucho talento! ¡Tocar música con ella es un regalo! Tal vez la gente piense que la conozco bien y que tenemos una relación muy cercana y personal, pero no es el caso exactamente. Por supuesto, está muy ocupada con su familia y su trabajo así que, para mí, es muy importante respetar su intimidad. Llega a la prueba de sonido, hacemos una prueba de sonido con ella cada vez que tenemos un concierto, nos saluda, ¡somos 31 músicos en el escenario! Y después, por supuesto, la veo durante el espectáculo, pero no solemos hablar en privado muy a menudo y lo entiendo perfectamente.
4. ¿Tienes alguna canción favorita del repertorio de Celine? ¡Me gustan todas! Es decir, en serio, ¿cómo puede no gustarte alguna de sus canciones? Tengo algunas favoritas, como Where Does My Heart Beat Now y Nothing Broken But My Heart, estas eran canciones que solíamos tocar muy a menudo cuando empecé a trabajar con ella así que me traen muy buenos recuerdos ¡Hay unas partes geniales para la guitarra en esas canciones! También me gustan en especial Think Twice y The Reason. Me gusta tocar My Heart Will Go On y, desde hace poco, tocar At Seventeen al lado de Celine durante el espectáculo es un momento muy bueno y emotivo para mí.
5. ¿Hay alguna de las canciones del catálogo de Celine que aún no ha interpretado en directo y que te gustaría tocar? Oh, muchas. Pero entiendo que escogen las canciones que ella quiere interpretar en conciertos por diversos motivos así que me ciño a eso y estoy muy contento con el repertorio de los directos de Celine.
6. ¿Qué supone para ti compartir el escenario con una orquesta de 31 músicos cada noche? Es un auténtico honor, músicos muy buenos y el poder de un grupo tan grande es muy grande, ¡me pone una sonrisa en la cara cada vez que tocamos!
7. ¿Cómo describirías tu experiencia durante el Taking Chances World Tour? ¡Ah! ¡Una gira muy divertida que me trae muchos recuerdos! Muy distinto de lo que hacemos ahora. Estuvimos viajando mucho por todo el mundo. Fue una gran oportunidad ver todas aquellas ciudades geniales. Eran grandes conciertos, abarrotados de gente y prácticamente siempre llenos, fue muy interesante ver cómo la gente reacciona de manera diferente a las canciones. Celine es una artista que tiene éxitos diferentes en cada país, una de las razones de esto es que ella también canta en francés. Así que en Francia y en Montreal, de donde venimos nosotros, ¡es un espectáculo diferente! Algunas canciones como Think Twice, por ejemplo, fueron un gran éxito en Reino Unido, así que teníamos que interpretar esa canción cuando pasamos por allí. El espectáculo era diferente dependiendo un poco de donde estuviésemos, ¡lo que lo hizo incluso más interesante!
8. Me sorprendió que me aceptaras como amigo en Facebook ¿Qué supone para ti tener una relación tan directa con los fans? Bueno, ¡es genial! Para mí, es parte de mi trabajo. Al principio, no estaba seguro de si iba a aceptar a los fans de Celine, pero después me dije "¿por qué no?" Me alegra hablar de mi trabajo con ella; sin embargo, obviamente, no puedo revelar información personal sobre ella ni detalles del espectáculo que no se deberían saber... Entiendo que a la gente le gustaría saber ciertas cosas sobre ella, pero definitivamente mi trabajo no consiste en hablar sobre esas cosas.
9. ¿Hay algún momento que siempre recordarás desde que trabajas con Celine? ¡Tenemos la suerte de llevar una vida bastante emocionante! Nos han pasado muchas cosas geniales, he tenido la oportunidad de ver el mundo con Celine y eso ha abierto mi mente mucho, yo diría. Mi cabeza está llena de recuerdos y momentos geniales que hemos vivido juntos. Especialmente durante los conciertos. Creo que el más memorable tiene que ser la oportunidad que tuvimos de actuar 2 noches seguidas en el Stade de France en París en 1999. Noventa mil personas cada noche, así que 180.000 en total, ¡aquello fue impresionante! Hace unos días tuvimos la oportunidad de actuar en el Jazz & Blues Festival en Jamaica, fue muy divertido, un público genial, ¡la gente cantaba las canciones incluso más alto de lo que podíamos tocar!
10. ¿Cuáles son tus cantantes favoritos? Celine, ¡por supuesto! Es decir, ¡la quiero mucho, tiene mucho talento y es muy auténtica! Pero por supuesto, me gustan muchos cantantes, el mundo está lleno de gente con mucho talento y aprecio mucho a artistas y estilos de música diferentes.
11. El año pasado, el marido y manager de Celine, René Angelil, fue entrevistado en el programa de televisión canadiense Salut Bonjour. Durante la entrevista, dijo que es probable que, tras finalizar su espectáculo en Las Vegas, Celine hará una gira mundial de dos años. Ella no visitó a sus fans españoles durante su última gira, ¿alguna vez has venido a España y te gustaría tocar en un concierto con Celine en nuestro país? ¡Claro, me encantaría! La única vez que fuimos a España, si recuerdo bien, fue en 1992, para la Exposición Universal de Sevilla. Yo no formo parte del equipo de producción, que decide cuándo y a dónde vamos cuando estamos de gira, ese es el departamento de René y puede ser bastante reservado sobre eso. Parece ser que nos quedaremos en el Caesar's Palace de Las Vegas durante algunos años, pero eso no significa que no vayamos a hacer algunas giras entre tanto, así que sí, ¡tengo muchas ganas de que volvamos pronto a España!

Hello Andre. First of all, thank you once again for allowing me to do this interview and for dedicating your time. You are very kind.
Let's go with the questions:
1. As we (the fans) know, you've been working with Celine for quite a long time. Would you tell me what it was like when you first meet her? It was actually 25 years ago, I had a call to replace my guitar teacher Michael Pucci for one show with Celine in Quebec City, at that time, it was a whole different band, even Mego was not there yet! I was very excited, one of my first job as a professional musician. I had done no rehearsal with the band. Of course, I had listen and work on all the songs at home to learn the material as well as I could!! We all came in at the sound check in the afternoon, at that time, fashion being what it is, I was wearing funny pants with big stripes! Celine was really nice to me, she came in and said: Hey! I like your pants!!
2. How would you describe your first tour experience with Celine Dion? The first major tour I did with Celine was when we were opening for singer Michael Bolton in 1992. It was summertime, we did all major American cities, outdoor shows with pretty large audiences, it was a lot of fun!
3. What is it like to work with Celine Dion? How is your relationship with her? Celine is a very sweet person, probably the same way you see her. She's just genuinely nice! I really try to give her my best as a musician. She rarely ask for specific things, she seems to have trust in what we do so. Mego, our musical director, is a sweet heart as well and he's taking good care of everyone. It's quite wonderful to work for Celine. I find her so gifted! Playing music with her is a charm! People might think that I know her well and that we are close but that's not exactly the case. Of course, she's very busy with her family and her work so for me, it's very important that I respect her intimacy. She comes at the sound check, we do a sound check with her every time we have a show, she says hello to us, we are 31 musicians on stage! And then of course, I see her during the show but I don't get the chance to talk to her privately that often and I totally understand that!
4. Do you have a favorite song from Celine's repertoire? I like them all! I mean, seriously, what's not to like?! I have a few favorites of mine, Where Does My Heart Beat Now, Nothing Broken But My Heart, those are songs we played a lot when I started with her so they bring back great memories! Great guitar parts in those songs! Think Twice and The Reason as well. I like to play My Heart Will Go On and lately, playing At Seventeen close to Celine during the show is for me a very good and emotional moment!
5. Is there a song from Celine's catalogue that she hasn't performed live yet and you'd like to play during one of her shows? Oh there are a lot of those too! But I understand that they pick songs she wants to do for specific reasons so I'm following that and I'm very happy with her live repertoire!
6. What is it like for you to play with a 31-piece orchestra every night? It is an awesome thrill, very good musicians and the power of such a big group is very fun and brings up a smile on my face every night we play!
7. Would you describe your experience during the 2008-2009 Taking Chances World Tour? Ah! Fun tour and great memories as well! Very different that what we do now. We traveled the world a lot! So it was a great chance to see all those wonderful cities. It was big shows packed up everywhere we went, very interesting to see how people react differently to songs. Celine is an artist that has different hits from one country to another, one of the reason being that she also sings in French. So in France and in Montreal, where we come from, it's a different show! Some songs like Think Twice for instance, was a huge success in England, so we had to play that song there. The show was a bit different depending on where we were playing it, which made it even more interesting!
8. I was surprised when I found out that you had accepted me as a friend on FaceBook. How is it like for you to have such a direct relationship with the fans? Well, it's great! For me, it's part of my job, at first, I didn't know if I was going to accept Celine's fan but I said to myself, why not? I'm happy to talk about my work with her, however, I will obviously, never reveal personal informations about her or things about the show that are not suppose to be known... I understand that people would like to know certain things about her but that is certainly not my role to talk about those things.
9. Is there a special moment that you'll always since the first time you worked with Celine? We're lucky to have a pretty exciting life! Lots of nice things happened to us, I had the chance to see the world with Celine and that opened up my mind a lot I would say! My head is full of great memories and moments that we experienced all together! The whole fun of that being to do the shows! I think the most memorable one has to be when we did 2 nights in a row at Le Stade De France in Paris in 1999, 90 000 people every night so 180 000 in 2 nights, that was very impressive! A few days ago we had the chance to play at the Jazz and Blues Festival in Jamaica, it was very fun, awesome audience, people were singing the songs even louder than we could play!!
10. Who are your favorite singers? Certainly Celine of course! I mean, I just love her, she is so talented and so real! But of course, I like a lot of singers, the world is full of talented people and I really appreciate different artists and styles of music!
11. Last year, Celine's husband and manager René Angelil was interviewed in the canadian TV show Salut-Bonjour. During the interview, he said that Celine will probably do a two-year-long World Tour once her residency show ends. She didn't visit her Spanish fans during her latest tour, did you ever come to Spain and would you like to play during a live show with Celine in our country? Of course I would love that!! The only time we went in Spain if I do remember correctly, was for The Universal Exposition in Sevilla, in 1992! But I am not at all part of the team of production who decide when and where we are going to tour, that is really Rene's Department and he can be pretty secretive about all that! It seems that we might be staying at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for quite a long time but that doesn't mean we won't be able to do some tours in between so yes, I really wish we will go back to Spain soon !
